“This is a great place to meet people from different cultures, and to get to know about cultures other than your own.” – Meghan McElhaney, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

History

Celebrating 20th Anniversary

In September 1991, Bodwell High School embarked on its journey to educate students from around the globe. There were only six students in the first semester. The original campus was located on West 12th Avenue in the City of Vancouver (picture at right). In four years, enrollment grew to 250 representing a dozen countries, mostly Asian. With quite modest school’s facilities, Bodwell’s wealth was in the school community, aspiring students and dedicated faculty.

One activity that was sure to demonstrate the school’s spirit was its annual training and participation in the Dragon Boat Festival. The ‘Bodwell Barracudas’, as the team was affectionately known then, was a multinational team to be reckoned with! The school founders, Mr. Yuen and Ms. Lee, as well as some current teachers and staff who were around in those early years – Dr. Garland, Mr. Hallis, Ms. Yandy, Mr. Graham, Mr. Macintosh, Ms. Carson, Mr. Ng, and Ms. Canderan – have many interesting stories and fond memories to share with current students.

In 2003, the rich school atmosphere and pride of the community were brought over to its new harbour-front campus in North Vancouver. The new facilities, including a full-size gym, an indoor swimming pool, and a high-ceiling cafeteria, allowed a capacity of 400 students and 150 boarders. At this time, under the leadership of Mr. Smith as Principal, the school adopted its current House System, Student Parliament, and student uniform, and changed its team name to the ‘Bodwell Bruins’.

In 2011, celebrating its 20th anniversary, Bodwell completes its expansion project including an enlarged cafeteria, 10 new classrooms, and 100 additional dormitory places. The community of 450 students, 100 staff, and 4,500 alumni from over 50 countries, is visioning a unique Canadian school that always upholds the spirit of diversity.
