“Watching students, including myself, grow more mature every year as Bodwell has developed into a more diverse place has been a unique experience. Bodwell High School has gathered a great number of students from different cultures and nurtured them to learn and develop life long skills together in a very Canadian setting. I have found my opportunities and dream here at Bodwell.” – Steve Hsu, Taiwan

We enable students from around the globe to become active learners and well-rounded citizens who contribute positively to the world.

Expression through Art

It was an exciting and active semester for Bodwell’s artists. Over the past few months, art classes at Bodwell applied their skills both in the classroom and out in the world. The Digital Media class and the Studio Art 11/12 classes went on field trips around Vancouver. Art 10, Advanced Placement classes, and Studio Art 11/12 visited the Vancouver Art Gallery to view and study the newest exhibitions, while artists from the Vancouver Institute of Design and Art visited Bodwell to speak with students.

Impressively, the North Shore News featured some exciting art projects from several of our students, including Domenica Diaz and Marieke Maas. Furthermore, in 2011, the North Shore News will feature three Bodwell student artists in their Young Artist of the Week section of the newspaper.  Watch for Sindy Lam, Sierra Tasi-Baker, and Erika Rothenburger in a Wednesday paper.  In addition, many of our Grade 12 Art students are actively applying to art schools around the world.

Another huge achievement in art resulted in students becoming involved in the local arts community. Students from Studio Art 11/12 classes worked on art projects inspired by the Vancouver Biennale Sculptures installed around Vancouver. These projects are being juried in April for a show sponsored by the North Vancouver Community Arts Council. This show is called “Big Ideas: Responding to Public Art”. Through creating, students explored current topics such as homelessness, cultural identity, science and technology, societal norms, and the environment.

Art work from Studio Art 11/12 classes was juried and 23 pieces were selected for the show.  Those 23 pieces were created by 17 grade 11 and 12 students from Studio Art 11/12 A and B classes.  Successful student art will be displayed at CityScape Community Art Space from April 8 – April 23.  Check out the Bodwell Studio Art Blog here.

The semester finished up with the Winter Semester Student Art Exhibition, in which students showed off their creations to other students and staff.  It has been a very inspiring semester for all!
