The Visual Arts program at Bodwell High School allow all students to explore technical studio skills and processes in art. Students are given many opportunities to develop skills in basic and advanced drawing, painting (watercolour, acrylic, oil), printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, collage, mixed media, and digital media. As well, digital media is composed of black and white photography, history and major photographers in the media world, as well as, the comprehensive teaching of the graphics editing software, Adobe Photoshop. Art theory, art aesthetics, art criticism, visual problem-solving, and art meaning are all covered. Art history and how it has influenced art throughout the ages is taught in the classes. Students learn to respond to artworks by observing, describing, reflecting, analyzing, interpreting, evaluating and having in class critiques.
Art making in a nurturing environment allows students to recognize in themselves abilities they didn’t know they had and helps them to develop creativity and passion for the arts. The art courses offered also prepare students for future art courses in post secondary schools.
