“Bodwell provides lots of structure, but also treats us like people. I feel respect from every teacher and administrator. We learn a lot more in our classes, compared with other schools I have attended. Our classes are longer, which is much better than short periods when nothing much gets done. I love learning about different cultures. There are people here from countries I always wanted to know more about.” – Kayla Buksa, Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Clubs

Bodwell High School gives the opportunity for students to pursue interests in a full range of stimulating extra-curricular clubs. Students can participate in any of the following:

Arts

  • Open Art Studio – This extracurricular activity is for students who are interested in doing art after school. The club is for Advanced Placement Art and Studio Art students to work on and finish their portfolios and projects with an art teacher available to help, and all other students who would like to do art after school. They can draw, paint, work with clay or do printmaking.
  • Knitting Club – Students can be experienced or beginners.
  • Acting For Film and Television – The idea is for students to come along with their movie projects. They can get ideas for content, and how to present their ideas on camera, through working with their teacher and classmates. Anyone can join!
  • Advanced Music – Students in the Advanced Band Club play the same repertoire as those in the Advanced Band class. For those unable to fit music class into the regular timetable, this club offers an opportunity to maintain and improve musical skills, as well as to participate in concerts and trips throughout the semester.

Academics

  • Yearbook Club – This club develops photography, writing, and magazine publishing skills. The goal of this club is to publish the yearbook in the Summer (2010) Semester and might work in conjunction on some publications with the Computer Club. Students are encouraged to be involved in the club for at least two semesters.
  • Computer Club – The club’s objectives are to establish links between student interest in computer technology and technology project opportunities. Students will be encouraged to ’spread their wings’ and have fun by creating project(s) by using computer technology. Integration of multi-media into student software projects is encouraged.
  • Investment Club – The investment club will give students an opportunity to learn about how to manage money and actively invest in the stock market. Students will use the website www.smartstocks.com to maintain a simulated portfolio within a group of students much like a hockey pool, we can see how each other is doing overall. Information will be provided on market terminology, investing strategies, and how to look for possible investments. Each student will also present a possible investment opportunity to the class that they have researched.

Citizenship

  • Roots and Shoots – This environmentally conscious club will meet 2 times a week to care for the path leading to the bridge that will go over the train tracks (on the shortcut to Capilano Mall). Students will remove invasive non-native plants to BC, and be part of the planning and design for replanting along the path when the bridge is built. A representative from The City of North Vancouver will get student input into the use of this path. Students will also:· Discuss how Bodwell can become an environmentally sustainable institute
    · Get involved in environmental stewardship
    · Develop a plan for a school-wide project (Jane Goodall’s Roots & Shoots Contest)
    · Apply for grants, write letters, and fundraise for various environmental projects
Visit www.rootsandshoots.org for more information and to see a video of Bodwell students at the latest workshop.
  • Volunteer Club – Students participate in a range of volunteering opportunities in the neighbouring communities.
  • Recycling Club – Students in the club will be involved in sorting and cleaning pop & juice bottles/cans.
  • Rafiki Club / Multicultural Club
Jambo! Rafiki Club aims to build friendship, awareness, and support between Bodwell students and students in three schools in Maai Mahiu, Kenya.  You will make connections with our sister schools through projects as well as online communities (see: bodwell.edu/rafiki/).  Students will also build awareness of Kenyan and Canadian culture while making international friendships that have the power to last a lifetime.
