“Bodwell is so different from my home city, where people are mostly the same.  I like the different cultures, and am learning languages through my conversations with friends from around the world.” – Cheyenne Rabb, U.S.A.

Kenya Trip

A group of five to ten high school students from Bodwell High School is planning to volunteer for two weeks this coming April with our partner school in Kenya, East Africa. While in Kenya, we will be volunteering with local development agencies, meeting with Kenyan students, volunteering at a local orphanage, and more.

As students or parents of students at Bodwell High School, you understand the importance of learning in a multicultural environment – that is doubtless one of the reasons you chose Bodwell High School.  In the Rift Valley of Kenya, we have a chance to bring youth from diverse cultures to the region from which all of humanity is thought to have originated.  Through this, we strive to build a generation of leaders who truly understand the meaning of global citizenship; a generation of students who by their understanding of the world will lead in their chosen profession.

The Rafiki Link is an important link between Bodwell High School and a high school in the Maai Mahiu region of Kenya.  Thanks to the support of Bodwell staff members, the Rafiki Link involves ongoing communication and connection between this school and Bodwell.  In August 2007, a former Bodwell teacher, Ms. Mali Bain, volunteered 8 months of her time living and volunteering in this community, following the first very successful student trip. Both in 2009 and 2010, a total of 18 students and four Bodwell teachers brought messages of peace and goodwill to the Maai Mahiu community, completing various volunteer activities.  Please take a look at a short video made by one student participant on the Bodwell website:  http://www.bodwell.edu/highschool/citizenship/kenya-trip-2010-video/.

Our fourth trip will surely build upon the successes of the first three and in particular will allow students to connect on a very personal level with students in Kenya.  This is truly the opportunity of a lifetime.
