Strengthening our Rafiki Link
Our relationship with students and teachers in the community of Maai Mahiu, Kenya, has continued to strengthen, thanks to the determined eforts of Rafiki sponsors: Mali Bain, Tanya Radakovic, and Ivan Ng. Personal correspondence continues to flow back and forth between our two communities. Our students, aware of the financial plight of their friends in Kenya, have raised enough money to send three impoverished, but able, Kenyan students to school.
On April 15th, Mr. Ng and Ms. Radakovic will be taking 10 students to Kenya, to work on volunteer projects and to strengthen the bond of friendship - "Rafiki" is the Swahili word for friendship! They will be taking with them some more electronic equipment, donated by the Bodwell community, so badly needed in Kenyan schools.
Personal contributions for the Rafiki project are always welcome!

Award from B.C. Hydro
At our Final Assembly on April 3rd, Edna Alle from B.C. Hydro was on hand to present a special award to our Bodwell Eco-Action Team. This is what she said:
I am delighted to be with you today for your Final Assembly. I am representing BC Hydro to make a special award. In fact, this is the very first one this year. THrough the BC Hydro Community Champion program, for three years BC Hydro's Community Investment department has provided the opportunity for BC school classes, grade 4 to 12, to nominate a not-for-profit organization that supports sustainability, conservation or environmental issues in BC. The selected nominations could receive a donation up to $1,000.
As Mahatma Gandhi once or maybe twice, expressed, "You must be the change that you see in the world." I understand that here at Bodwell you have four houses named after some very famous people (Gandhi, Mandela, King, Trudeau) who practised just that. Bravo to you all for aspiring to make a difference in our society.
This 2008 nominated group has its own mentor as a local Community Champion. The first North Shore High School Eco-fest was an event that not only empowered students to engage in environmental activism, but it allowed organizations and community businesses to expand and network with each other in order to achieve their goals within the North Shore community. Its impact on the community was recognized by the city of North Vancouver, and they were awarded its 2008 Environmental Stewardship Award.
Congratulations to BEAT - the Bodwell Eco-Action Team - with mentor Stephen Goobie who have been selected to be awarded the full $1,000 Community Champion donation. It is meant to assist your group with continued success and to keep up the good work! May BEAT continue to strive to be a positive force for environmental change amongst your peers and your community. On behalf of BC Hydro, thank you for making a difference, and again Congratulations on being Community Champions! |

Review of the Trimester System
An extensive review of our Trimester System was carried out this semester, to determine whether our school calendar is the one that best serves the needs of our students. Staff, students, parents and alumni were consulted. In the end, it was concluded that the Trimester System should continue for the foreseeable future.
Alumni said they liked the system for the following reasons:
- Better preparation to cope with the similar calendar at university
- Opportunity to attend school for a full calendar year, and to complete three years of High School in two years
- Those in AP program on arrival were able to graduate at the same time as their peers
- Able to focus only on 3-4 courses at a time
Student leaders liked the system because:
- More variety in subjects and faculty
- Stay active and interested
- More choice in subjects they take
- Pushes them to work harder than in a linear system
- More control over their own program and the pace of completion
- Accelerate learning from AP to graduation
- Opportunity to retake courses and upgrade marks within a year
- Option of a longer holiday by taking a semester off
- With more class changes, you get to meet more people and make more friends |

Technology Plan
A survey of our students revealed that 93% of them own their own laptop computers. As more and more teachers are using computer technology to enhance teaching and learning, a recommendation has been made by our Technology Planning Committee to require ALL students to have, as part of their required school equipment in September 2009, a laptop computer.
The Committee will be spefifying hardware and software requirements in due course and will let parents and students know these requirements well before the start of the Fall Semester. |
