Wangu Wa Makeri

Wangu Wa Makeri was the ruler of the whole of Kikuyuland. She ruled with an iron fist - all men and women really feared her because she would not hesitate to whip, punish and even confiscate the property of any offender.

She was so ruthless that she was feared all over the land. She would be carried around on the shoulders of men, and because she was big and fat the men would have a very difficult time carrying her around.

The rest of the women copied her ruthless behaviour. They ruled over their husbands - they mistreated them and made them do all the work at home.

The men felt so oppressed and jealous of women's power that they decided to look for ways to free themselves from the bondage of their women.

Wangu Wa Makeri's husband together with all the men of the land held a meeting. They agreed to incapacitate the women by impregnating them at the same time.

While the women were busy giving birth and nursing their babies, the men took over power. That was the end of women's rule and oppression over men.

- Kikuyu legend, as re-told by Mrs. Ogega, Longonot Secondary School
