Fundraising Goals for Fall 2007

"By helping someone who has need, we are helping ourselves"
- 'Ubuntu' as quoted from Bono

There are many areas in which schools in Kenya need support; in fact, all of the funding for public schools in Kenya currently comes from donations.  The concept behind Urafiki is that friendship is the basis for any support we give.

This project aims rather to connect YOU with specific people, classes, and groups in Kenya. As you come to see these communities/people as friends, colleagues, and counterparts, we may work together to support these groups when/if they have needs.

There are two main ways in which you can donate: to the general fund, or as part of your Urafiki link with a classroom/group in Kenya.

General Donations

For staff, students, and members of the Bodwell community - donations of any amount are welcome to the 'general' fund to support schools in Kenya. As you donate, please indicate which of the following you would like to support with your donation...

3.  examination supplies - the final exams in Kenya require all students to have a 'log book' - a paper book which contains values for cos, sin, log, etc. Students who cannot afford the cost are forced to skip questions involving such calculations - thus reducing their overall exam marks.

GOAL Purchase of logbooks to be kept by the school for those who are unable to purchase their own.
Total cost: $400 ($8 per student; 60 students in need)
PROGRESS

2.  sports equipment for the school - most 'PE departments' consist of a wooden box in the teachers' area, containing one or two balls (hopefully one with air). High-quality sports equipment is invaluable to the schools!

GOAL Donation of at least one high-quality soccer ball to each school (3 balls total).
Total cost: $240 ($80 per high-quality ball)
PROGRESS

1.  sponsorship for students who can’t pay fees - in Kenya, even public high school requires fees. On average, these fees are approximately $400/year. Students whose parents are unable to pay often withdraw from school

GOAL Sponsorship for at least ONE student at each school (3 students total) who have withdrawn due to lack of school fees.
Total cost: $1200 ($400 per student for 1 year)
PROGRESS

Please consider donating as you are able; any donations are gratefully accepted and will be well-used.

NB: If you would like to receive a tax receipt for your donation, please contact Ms. Bain prior to donating.

There are three major ways in which we building friendships with - and thus potentially supporting - schools in Kenya:

JAMBO - Introductions

GOAL Every mentor class at Bodwell will send something personal - a photo, video, donation, gift, computer file... to their partner class in Kenya.
PROGRESS

TUENDE - Extracurricular

GOAL At least three student groups (eg environment, global awareness, basketball?) will decide to support their counterparts in Kenya by donating funds or equipment.

PROGRESS

 - The Environment Club has donated funds to sponsor students AND to support tree nurseries at the  three schools - click here for further details

PAMOJA - Curricular

GOAL At least ONE class in Canada will decide to donate equipment, funds, or resources to support a similar class in Kenya.
